Amputation Care

Med1Care Therapy Partner’s specializes in amputation care, focusing on independence and skills development. We provide comprehensive, personalized support for amputation patients, helping them regain function and enhance their quality of life. Our team collaborates with your healthcare professionals and offers a holistic approach to your recovery.

Overview of Amputation Care

  • Around 2 million people are currently living with limb loss. Lower limb amputation is primarily driven by disease processes, while trauma is the leading cause of upper limb loss. A rise in amputations has been observed due to factors like the increasing prevalence of diabetes, higher numbers of returning veterans, and incidents involving motor vehicle and industrial accidents.
  • Facing amputation is just the beginning of the challenges. Several factors can complicate life post-amputation, including the level of limb loss, cognitive impairments, physical condition, nutritional status, and available social support. Our goal is to assist in overcoming these challenges alongside you.

The Objective of Our Program

  • Our program at Med1Care Therapy Partners strives to offer comprehensive amputation care through a collaborative and patient-centered approach. We form a trans-disciplinary amputation care team (TACT) that includes all relevant members to ensure seamless communication and continuity of care.

  • We focus on providing efficient and effective care by utilizing up-to-date and evidence-based Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs).

Some of the CPGs we reference include:

  • VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guidelines for Rehabilitation of Individuals with Lower Limb Amputation
  • Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Rehabilitation of Lower Limb Amputation Am J Phys Med Rehabil 2019;98:820-829
  • VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Upper Limb Amputation Rehabilitation

Our approach is tailored to each phase of amputation care:

Perioperative Phase (before surgery)
  •  In this phase, we work to potentially avoid amputation by addressing underlying causes like diabetes and peripheral vascular management.
  • For individuals aware of the need for amputation, this stage aims to create a strategy for enhancing functional outcomes after surgery, taking into account factors influencing the decision to amputate, residual limb length, and the level of amputation.
Preprosthetic Phase (after amputation but before custom prosthetic)
  • During this phase, we assist you with various equipment to prepare for a custom prosthetic. We guide you through the process of obtaining a prosthetic and help you maximize function without it to reduce falls and enhance daily activities.
Prosthetic Training Phase (after receiving prosthetic)
  • In this phase, our focus is on helping you regain functionality. We employ reliable functional outcome measures to track your progress and ensure a return to quality movement. We use a combination of measures to capture all improvements and requirements.

Peer Support Services

Amputee Support Groups offer individuals who have undergone amputations and their families a platform to seek answers both before and after the procedure. Med1Care Therapy Partners aims to create an environment for networking, acquiring valuable insights, and sharing experiences among community members.

Balance & Gait Disorders

Med1Care Therapy Partner specializes in providing expert physical therapy services to address balance and gait problems. Indications of these balance and gait issues include difficulties in walking, getting up from a seated position, or bending down to tie shoelaces.

Walking is a multiplex activity that requires the coordination of various systems, including the brain, bones, muscles, and cardiovascular system. Any challenges in these systems can significantly affect one’s walking ability and balance.

Effective treatment is crucial since gait conditions increase the risk of injuries resulting from falls. Also, gait disorders might serve as potential indicators of underlying medical conditions, such as neurological disorders, dementia, or musculoskeletal disorders.

Causes of Balance & Gait Problems

Balance and gait conditions can result from various factors, including the weakening of leg and core muscles.

Each person’s gait is unique, and symptoms can vary significantly. However, observing how the body moves can offer insights into the underlying reasons for the gait problem.

Gait disorders may stem from different causes such as arthritis, injuries, pain, weakness in the lower limbs and feet, heart conditions, respiratory issues, and obesity.

There are six common types of gait conditions (classified by underlying cause):

Med1Care receptionist welcome.
patient-receiving-physiotherapy-on-knee-by-med1care-therapist
Hemiplegic Gait

Hemiplegic gait, typically caused by a stroke, affects one side of the body. The arm on the affected side ceases to swing during walking, and the leg is dragged in a semi-circle to move forward.

Diplegic Gait

Diplegic gait, often caused by stroke, head trauma, or cerebral palsy, impacts both sides of the body. It involves inward turning of the ankles as the hips and knees bend, resulting in a swinging effect in the steps.

Neuropathic Gait (foot drop)

Neuropathic gait (foot drop), usually caused by conditions like multiple sclerosis (MS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or peripheral neuropathy. This condition leads to the foot dropping while stepping forward, necessitating higher knee lifting to prevent toe dragging on the ground.

Myopathic Gait (waddling gait)

Myopathic gait (waddling gait), typically caused by muscular dystrophy, muscle disease, weakness in the pelvic area, or spinal muscle weakness. Walking with this gait resembles a side-to-side movement.

Ataxic Gait

Ataxic gait, often caused by alcohol intoxication, medication, or brain injury. Walking with this gait produces staggering and weaving movements, and balance may be affected with swaying while standing

Parkinsonian Gait

Parkinsonian gait, commonly associated with Parkinson’s disease. It is characterized by small steps, forward stooping, and a bent neck and back.

Headaches

Med1Care Therapy Partner’s are experts in addressing tension headaches through our team of skilled physical therapists. Tension headaches may manifest as pain that spans the entirety of the head, concentrates on a specific side, or lingers around the eyes and forehead.

Typical indications encompass throbbing discomfort that varies between a constant, mild ache and a sudden, intense stabbing pain. The intensity of the headache is measured by its impact on daily functioning. Are you able to carry on with work commitments? Can you experience uninterrupted sleep during the night?

Causes of Headaches

Tension headaches may arise from various factors such as stress, back-related problems, incorrect posture, or unhealthy lifestyle choices. Unfortunately, excessive use of over-the-counter pain relievers can also contribute to the onset of headaches.

When confronted with a stressful situation, it’s advisable to plan ahead or streamline your schedule by removing unnecessary tasks. To improve your posture, remember to draw your shoulders back and maintain a level head position, while also engaging your buttocks and abdominal muscles. When seated, ensure your thighs are parallel to the ground.

If your headache isn’t attributable to stress, posture, or lifestyle factors, there’s a possibility of a more significant neurological origin. In such cases, a visit to your doctor’s office might involve diagnostic techniques like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized tomography (CT) scans to identify potential underlying causes.

How We Help

For those grappling with persistent or recent-onset headaches, our physical therapy techniques for managing headaches can offer substantial relief. Our team of therapists is adept at addressing back discomfort, rectifying posture issues, and ultimately enhancing your quality of life.

Med1Care Therapy Partner boasts a team of seasoned therapists specifically skilled in tackling the underlying back and posture-related problems contributing to headaches. Our comprehensive treatment strategies encompass a thorough physical assessment, aimed at discerning the root causes of your headaches by analyzing their pain patterns, severity, and location. Collaboratively, we will work in conjunction with your physician to lay the groundwork for your journey towards recovery.

Back Stabilization

Med1Care Therapy Partner’s physical therapists offer tailored exercises aimed at enhancing your back strength and flexibility. Our focus is on boosting mobility, averting potential injuries, and managing discomfort.

Our therapeutic strategy encompasses spinal stabilization, refining posture and movement, comprehensive guidance, and physical conditioning.

Core stabilization proves notably effective in significantly alleviating persistent, nonspecific lower back pain. This method surpasses standard physical therapy exercises in addressing this type of pain.

What is Back Pain Stabilization?

Back pain stabilization, or lumbar stabilization, comprises exercises designed to enhance the strength of your lower back muscles, particularly those in your core. The primary aim is to bolster your spinal column’s ability to maintain an upright posture.

This reinforcement lends support to your entire body and facilitates physical activities with reduced strain on your back. Consequently, it leads to decreased back pain and a diminished risk of back injuries.

Lumbar Stabilization Exercises

Lumbar stabilization exercises, also referred to as spinal stabilization exercises, target the strengthening of your back muscles to provide essential support for your spine. The ultimate outcome is a back that is free from pain.

The core muscles, located in your lower back and abdomen, play a pivotal role. Insufficient muscular strength in this region can contribute to lower back pain. For instance, activities involving heavy lifting place stress on your lower back. Lumbar stabilization aims to maintain spinal strength during lifting.

Concussion Examination & Treatment

Med1Care Therapy Partner’s physical therapists offer outpatient concussion examinations to assess your health after experiencing a head injury, such as those from falls, car accidents, assaults, or sporting events.

Concussion symptoms may manifest immediately or worsen in the hours following the injury. Some common concussion symptoms include:

  • Difficulty thinking
  • Dizziness
  • Balance and walking difficulties
  • Headache
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Nausea
  • Vision impairment
  • Memory issues
  • Mood changes

Evaluating whether a concussion has occurred is crucial for appropriate treatment, healing, and reducing the risk of another concussion. It is highly likely to experience a second concussion if one returns to activity before the first concussion has healed completely. Such a situation, known as “second impact syndrome,” can lead to fatal brain swelling when a second concussion is sustained while the first one is still healing.

Reasons for Outpatient Concussion Examination

Immediate recognition and proper management of a concussion are essential to restore brain functionality and reduce the risk of repeated occurrences. A repeated concussion can take longer to heal, lead to permanent neurological damage, and, in severe cases, be fatal.

Following a head injury, a concussion examination will assess the brain’s processing and cognitive abilities by testing both physical and mental skills.

Concussion testing will evaluate:

  • Memory
  • Problem-solving abilities
  • Balance
  • Attention span
  • Concentration

For individuals participating in high-risk activities, obtaining a baseline test at the beginning of the sporting season is advisable. If a head injury occurs, the provider can compare the results with the baseline test to make an accurate diagnosis.

Concussion examinations should be repeated regularly for athletes over the age of ten, as the brain undergoes significant pruning and growth events during adolescence.

How We Help

If you require a concussion examination, our experienced physical therapists are here to assess your health and provide the necessary treatment.

An outpatient concussion examination may involve:

  • Memory tests
  • Concentration tests
  • A physical examination
  • Thinking tests to evaluate response speed

Med1Care Therapy Partner’s skilled therapists are trained to conduct comprehensive concussion examinations. We will collaborate with your physician to create a personalized treatment plan that aims to restore your physical and cognitive abilities, facilitate a safe return to regular activities, and prevent further brain trauma.

To take the first step towards recovery, please call us at 419.866.0555 to schedule a consultation. Our specialists are ready to guide you on your path forward to improved health and well-being.

Selective Functional Movement Assessment

Med1Care Therapy Partner’s adept physical therapists are well-versed in providing Selective Functional Movement Assessments (SFMA) to analyze your movement patterns and delve into the underlying causes of your discomfort. The SFMA evaluation is suitable for addressing a wide spectrum of conditions, injuries, or instances of pain.

By conducting an SFMA assessment, our therapists are empowered to methodically tailor exercise regimens and manual therapy interventions to not only alleviate your current pain but also to mitigate the risk of future injuries.

How SFMA Works

The Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) is a comprehensive method that involves observing and categorizing your distinct movement patterns across your entire body, distinguishing between functional and dysfunctional movements, as well as identifying painful and non-painful motions.

The assessment encompasses various motions, including:

  • Balancing on each leg
  • Neck rotation
  • Trunk twisting
  • Squatting
  • Arm and shoulder movements
  • Forward and backward bending

In instances where motor deficiencies are detected, such as issues with stability, limited joint mobility, or tight and restricted soft tissues, the pattern is further segmented to pinpoint the underlying causes.

To establish a baseline of your current capabilities, the SFMA is often coupled with traditional strength and range of motion testing. Armed with the insights gathered from the SFMA, your physical therapist can then create an effective and tailored treatment plan, while also gauging your progress throughout the course of rehabilitation.

How We Help

Med1Care Therapy Partner’s skilled therapists are well-versed in conducting Selective Functional Movement Assessments (SFMA) to effectively identify and address any prevailing symptoms linked to regions characterized by inadequate stability (motor control) or limited mobility (range of motion). Through SFMA diagnosis, we facilitate precise and targeted treatment strategies aimed at alleviating pain and enhancing quality of life. We will partner with your physician to ensure a comprehensive path to recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Virtual physical therapy sessions usually last for about an hour. Though this may be subjected to modification based on your symptoms and your treatment goals.

Most people go to therapy only two or three times a week for several reasons including their insurance and payment options. In this case, the responsibility for improvement falls on the individual as the stretching and strengthening exercises are really something that has to be done almost daily. The improvement you need won’t be gotten if you rely on just your therapy visits. Hence, home exercises are necessary.

Physical therapy is not a quick fix. For some tissues in the body to repair themselves, they require a certain amount of time and if you try to speed up the process by going for a quick fix, you could experience a re-injury. Hence, physical therapy requires some perseverance and patience.

Well, this depends on many different factors. Your physical therapist will collaborate with your care team and analyze a thorough evaluation in order to understand what is going on with your tissues and your pain. This will help us give a prognosis and timeframe for therapy so that you can achieve your goals.
